Setting Goals

Every new year, are you one of the many people that set goals (or resolutions)? This can be a great way for you to make some really good life changes. However, it can also lead to disappointment and frustration. There are some good ways to make sure you reach your goals, or at least make positive strides to get closer to your end goal.

One of the best pieces of advice I have received (from my dad) was to make lists. This can be helpful in goal setting as well. WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS! If you have multiple goals, it is easy to forget one or two that take more time to complete. Writing them down gives you a way to go back and make sure you are staying on task.

KEEP YOUR GOALS VISIBLE! After you write them down, make sure you keep them in a place where you will see them constantly. Don’t just write them in the back of a planner and never look back at them. Keep them as a background in your phone or on your computer. Write them on Post-It Notes and post them on your bathroom mirror or fridge. This will keep your goals “top of mind” and you will have a better chance of reaching your goals.

SEPARATE YOUR GOALS INTO CATEGORIES! Are you like me and have personal, business, and family goals? If so, break them down and put them in their own categories. This may seem like a useless step, but lets say that you have difficulty reaching a personal goal, you don’t want it to interfere with you reaching your other goals.

PUT TIMEFRAMES ON EACH GOAL! This is vital to me personally. If you are wanting to lose weight, make small monthly goals that can be more attainable than having a large number for the end of the year. As a side note, if you have a goal of losing weight, instead of making a goal to lose X amount of weight, make a goal to workout X number of days/week. This can help you not focusing too much on a number on a scale that can fluctuate.

CELEBRATE YOUR WINS! When you reach a goal, no matter how small, give yourself a reward. This can be something as simple as giving yourself time to do something you have been wanting to do (like watching a movie or going to get pampered). Obviously, the larger the goal or resolution, the larger the reward. This also helps because you are bound to be disappointed or frustrated during the year. Celebrating your accomplishments will help dull the disappointments that may arise.

UNDERSTAND YOUR FAILURES! Sorry to tell you, if you have multiple goals/resolutions, you will probably miss a few of them. If you do, sit down and take an inventory as to why you may have missed it. Understanding what may have went wrong can help you in the future to reach it down the road.

As always, if you have any questions or need help with your goals, we are here to help! Everything is easier when you have a support staff that will listen and be there through the rough times. Good luck this new year!
